Over the years I've used both dry and liquid yeast. Dry yeast was what I started out with, mainly because that was what came in the kits I bought. Over the years I have switched to liquid yeast because I like to harvest it for future batches. Partly because it saves me money and partly be cause I just think it's neat. Dry yeast is good to have on hand in case something happens to your liquid yeast or if you didn't have time to make a starter.

The one I use the most is American Ale 1056 (wYeast). My preference is PacMan when I can get it. Those two are great "house" strains. Another one I use a ton is French Saison 3711 (wYeast).
